 What Potential!
In addition to these opportunities, there is great potential to expand habitat and wildlife management projects on the Lower Brule Sioux Reservation. There are plans for creation of new wetlands, more upland prairie restoration, additional native tree and shrub plantings, and reintorduction of additional native species. The department also has plans to improve boat ramp for access to Lake Sharpe and modernizing recreation areas on the lake for overnight camping and day use.
Purchasing land from willing sellers on the reservation and areas surrounding the reservation that were once controlled by the Tribe is also a top priority. Once purchased the land will be restored and become a part of the plan to maximize wildlife habitat and hunting opportunities.
It is exciting to consider even more opportunities for sportsmen! The Lower Brule Sioux Reservation is one of the few places in the country where there remains potential for a significant increase in land acres available for all sportsmen and wildlife enthusiasts to enjoy.
The Problem
A lack of finances is the limiting factor in both expanding present programs, and moving forward with land aquisition.
A Solution
To continue progressing as one of the nation's leaders in wildlife management and provider of hunting and outdoor recreation opportunities, the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe supported the creation of the Maka Foundation. This foundation was established in April of 2005 to raise charitable funds in support of the projects and programs of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe Department of Wildlife, Fish and Recreation. The Maka Foundation now provides a unique alternative funding source, through philanthropy, for supporting the critical habitat and conservation work.
